Moon Phases, Perseid Meteor Shower, and More for August 2022

August 2022 is full of astrophotography opportunities! August starts with a Super Moon on the 11th, followed shortly by the Perseid Meteor Shower Peak on the 13th. Saturn will be at its peak viewing spot for the year as it enters Opposition to the Sun on August 14th. To top it all off, there are six Lunar Conjunctions before the month is over.

The Perseid Meteor Shower is the one of the most prolific meteor showers visible to North America. It will be circumpolar, meaning that it will stay above the horizon all night (at least here on the East Coast). The meteors will radiate from the North, but they will fly overhead in all directions. You do not need to stare at the radiant point to see them. Unfortunately, this year it peaks close to the Full Moon, so the Moon may outshine some of the shooting stars.
